The world is constantly evolving. That of running and promoting a driving school is evolving even faster. Once upon a time advertising was merely putting your number in the Yellow Pages and the local newspaper, then wait for the calls to roll in. However with the introduction of the internet and in particularly social media a new form of advertising has begun. Today we investigate the power of Twitter and which driving schools are putting it to best use.
I'm sure the question everyone is asking is, do the national schools come down to this near one on one form of communication and relationship building, or do the independent schools flourish as every student is a face to face customer and this friendship could make or break the deal.
Opening up for us is a driving school based in Leeds and Wakefield. Neat and tidy Twitter account with regular updates, promotions and congratulations to students who have passed their tests. These regular updates can help to build trust with new students who see regular passes and make previous custom feel appreciated.

Hailing from Essex Karen School Of Motoring have some neat features, embracing the use of social media and mobile technology. They give students some mobile bar codes to gain access to features, and excellent use of Twitter's background to put a neat easy to read banner down the left hand side. The account is extremely active main talking about local events focusing on their local target audience.

Yet again a local driving school showing how it should be down. Tidy logos, regular usage with a balance of regular conversation and advertising/self promotion. Another great addition on this Twitter account is the use of photos of students who have passed with the car in shot.

Based in Gateshead, NE Driving School enters at number 7 with a fantastic following of 470 tweeters! Not only do they have a great following but with a tally of 644 tweets they are obviously giving their customers something to be reading about. Regular posts on congratulating students on passes, promotional material, recommendations and general articles of interest.
6. @DLIDrivingsch - Followers 511 | Tweets 140
DLI Driving School has racked up a good following and is currently using its regular tweets as a promotional tool. In the past they have offered useful driving tip of the day which could be a feature they could take advantage of once more to build a bigger audience.
Go Green seem to have a great project going here. Regular postings with promotional material for their website and offering local community meetings aimed at promoting driving to young people and setting them on their way! Go Greens biggest weakness at the moment is using black out links. By using a tool like bitly they could condense their links and let people click on them improving ease of use!

A nicely run twitter account. Background images look great and regular updates to provide a decent sized audience something to read. Great feedback to students and good recommendations for readers to watch like Channel 5's recent reality programme Dangerous Drivers' School.

The first appearance of a national driving school, Bill Plant enter the charts at number 3. Not only do they enter the charts but they show tweeters how to do it! With an amazing 2518 tweets this is the most active profile in our top 10. Its all there! Promotions, discounts, competitions, even quotes from the highway code!

Britain's oldest driving school makes its appearance at number 2. Despite being formed in 1910 it is very much in the 21st century. Leading the way on how to run a successful Twitter account BSM give us campaigns, polls, and competitions. They seem to have a huge focus on generating interaction from their fellow Tweeters.
In the making of this article I removed driving schools that seemed quite dormant. Exeter Driving however I made an exception due to the huge amount of followers they had! The account has been quiet since summer 2010 however completely dwarf all of the national driving schools in the world of Twitter. At the time they were doing everything social media requires, its a shame at a time when social is booming they have stepped off the pedal. Use this to see how to build your own profile!
